Salamanca and other peas

Salamanca, the latest high-yielding white pea from LSPB, has gained full recommendation on the 2013 PGRO Recommended List for combining peas.

The variety has lived up to its promise seen in previous seasons, helped by its excellent standing ability for which it scores an unbeaten 8, says LSPB managing director Theo Labuda.

"Salamanca backs up market leader Gregor in our white pea portfolio. Its five-year mean yield score of 101 is the highest on the list and it has good resistance to downy mildew like other white peas currently on the RL.

"It is a taller plant type which, combined with its stiffness results in easier and more timely harvest.'

Salamanca is expected to suitable for the splitting food market and is currently being assessed by the end-user, says Mr Labuda.

"Gregor is well suited to this market as it has a bright yellow colour that doesn't fade. If Salamanca exhibits similar grain characteristics we hope the processor will be happy to take it on.'

Further down the line is Campus, a large blue pea that enters candidate RL trials in 2013.

This tall but very stiff variety achieved the top yield (108) of all varieties and types during two years of National Lists trials, ending up seven points ahead of fully recommended large blue Prophet, says Mr Labuda.

NIAB's Simon Kightley welcomes the advent of better varieties and increased prices, which he says offers combinable crop growers a real alternative.

"Salamanca bubbled to the top in a difficult season – it's a good stander. And Campus performed tremendously well in in 2012 and could be the next big step forward in large blues if this performance is confirmed in RL trials next year.

"For the candidates, with only two years of trial data, there are no direct comparisons with many of the recommended varieties. But a four-year data adjustment, using control varieties for linkage between years, allows us to make a good predictive estimate of their performance.'
