Press Release - 22.04.16: There's still time to drill spring beans - so wait for better soil conditions

LSPB Craig PadleyThe wet and cold weather called a halt to spring bean drilling for many growers, but it is not too late to drill, says breeder of top-of-RL varieties Vertigo and Fanfare.

"The usual reason for less successful later-drilled spring bean crops is lack of moisture - a factor that is certainly not a problem for most growers this season," says Craig Padley of LS Plant Breeding Ltd (LSPB). "While we would usually say mid-April marks the closure of the optimum spring bean sowing window, this year it is different. Growers are more likely to suffer a yield penalty by drilling in wet and often cold soil conditions than waiting for more favourable conditions.

"What is important is to select the high-yielding varieties to give you the greatest chance of the best possible yield. Vertigo and Fanfare sit at the top of the current PGRO Recommended List with a clear yield benefit over other varieties, so they are the top choice for growers in a late season like this."
